Detailed Definition

Priority:  For parents, students, and staff to feel safe in (and about) our schools.

Indicators:
Parent survey, student survey, staff survey, all given by District #41.

Type of report:  Bar graph and table

Report frequency:  Annually

Responsible for metric:  Superintendent and Superintendent’s Secretary

Distribution:  Cabinet, Principals, Board of Education, Parent Groups, and Community

When:  By the end of May each year

Determination of survey:  Three District surveys (parent, student, and staff) were developed by a team of teachers, administrators, and parents in 1999-2000.  These surveys provide six years of useful baseline data, thus we will continue to utilize this survey.

Determination of survey questions:   For each of the three surveys the safety question is used as follows:
  • Student survey question:  “I feel safe at school.”
  • Staff survey question:  “I feel safe at school.”
  • Parent survey question:  “My child is safe at school.”

Determination of baseline score, current score and goal: Scale of scores ranges from 1 to 5. One is Strongly Agree and two is Agree. Three is Neutral, four and five are Disagree and Strongly Disagree. This score is determined by the percentage of respondents that give a response of one or two to the question (Strongly Agree and Agree). Scores are accumulated for all responses to the question listed above by each group surveyed, then averaged. The Scorecard Number/Percent is determined by adding the score average from each survey (parent, student and staff) and dividing by three.

Comparatives:  As this survey was created by District #41, the only comparatives are the past years’ scores at each of the fifteen schools are available to determine the trend line. There are six years of trending as of 2007-08.

Trending:  Annual metric capturing 2003-08 metrics/data points.

Data fields necessary/main source of entry:  Each spring parents, students and staff take the district survey.  The staff and student surveys are taken on-line in cooperation with the Technology Department.  Parent surveys are sent home, returned to the home school, then forwarded to the Superintendent’s secretary.  The secretary then takes all the scores and tallies scores for each school along with District averages, when applicable.
