The New School Naming Committee met with a group of Rock Island residents last night to talk about the name of the school being built on Villa de Chantal property. The committee came up with five "starter" names: Villa Park, Villa Ridge, Villa Creek, Villa Bluff and Villa Del Sol.

"The committee felt is was important to keep the historical integrity of the place and are using it as a guideline to come up with a name for the New School," says Principal Ruthann Tobey-Brown. Teacher, Committee member and New School Development Team member Julie Hansen concurs, "We are looking for a balance between the old and the new and want to honor the past while looking toward the future."

The committee used the public forum last night to gather ideas for names, and will also have ballots available at school registration in July. The District web site will be used to gather names for the process as well.

After the group gathers community input and goes throught the polling process, they will take 2 or 3 names to the Board of Education in August. School District policy states that the Board must approve of the naming of new schools.

Submit your idea for the new school name to Ruth Ann Tobey-Brown

TJ Ice Cream What started out as a writing exercise for a first grade class at Thomas Jefferson Elementary turned into the summer flavor for Whitey’s Ice Cream.  “Funny Yummy Monkey,” a mixture of chocolate ice cream with bananas and vanilla wafers, was the winning creation from over 100 other classroom entries. “I’m excited that our creative writing project turned out to be the winner,” says first grade teacher Anitra Whiting. “The funny part is we can’t remember who exactly came up with the recipe or the name. It was definitely a classroom effort.”

Thomas Jefferson wasn’t the only school in the Rock Island District to enter recipes into the contest. Vicki Peterson’s Kindergarten class at Longfellow Elementary came up with Jamaica Jive (chocolate shake with espresso pieces) and Taffy Apple (Green apple shake with butterscotch and mixed nuts) came in as runner-ups. They will also see their creations in Whitey’s stores this summer as well.
