Summer Newsletter July 5, 2011

July 5, 2011

Dear Washington Parents and Students,

Let me be the first one to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year.  Hopefully, your summer has been fun, relaxing, and safe! It is my wish that you are looking forward to returning to school and getting reacquainted!

Registration for this school year will take place in the cafeteria, located on the 34th Street side of the building. Students who attended a District 41 school last year and live in the Washington district should register at the times listed below:

Wednesday, July 20   12:00 Noon – 8:00 P.M.

                                  Thursday, July 21        8:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon

Note:   Registration fees are $55 and checks should be made payable to WJHS.  Registration waivers are available for families that qualify. Students that qualify for free or reduced lunch automatically qualify for a registration waiver.

A parent/guardian must complete a registration card during this time and include the student’s social security number, contact phone numbers and medications taken at school.

At registration, each student will receive their Advisor’s name and his/her room number.  We are often asked about specific school supplies needed for the students attending junior high.  Our staff put together a basic list.

Band students must supply a working instrument with accessories along with the following: 3 ring binder with sheet protectors, pencil, Essential Elements 2000 Book 2.  All Percussionists must have a stick bag with sticks, general (soft) timpani mallets, hard rubber mallets, a pair of medium yarn mallets and chromatic pitch pipe.  (These percussion items may be purchased through a fall fundraiser.)

At 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, July 26, we will have our annual orientation for all of our new 7th graders and parents, as well as for any new student to our school.  This will take place in the cafeteria.  During the evening, general procedures will be reviewed and, of course, there will be time for questions.

The student day is from 8:13 until 2:20.  School is dismissed every day at 2:20, which helps parents plan.  Following dismissal, students may go to the “quiet” studyhall located in the library to work on homework from 2:30 until 3:30.  There are numerous other activities as well during this time.  For teachers, we hold conferences with parents and work with students from 2:30 until 3:30.

The first day of school for the students is on Wednesday, August 3 from 8:13 until 10:13.  Each day prior to entering the building, students are to wait on the playground located on the south side of the building.  Students enter through the cafeteria patio doors at 8:05 and go directly to their Advisory.  On this first day, students will receive their first semester schedule, hall locker assignment and padlock, complete “get acquainted” activities, review some basic rules, and will be given a tour of the building by their Advisor.

The first full day of school will be Thursday, August 4 from 8:13 until 2:20.

We have some exciting things planned for the students this year!  We will continue the “Rewards Program” which includes a series of reward activities, dances, Winning Warrior Breakfast, and field trips.  To make these programs work, cash donations are needed.  We do not conduct all school fundraisers since we feel it puts too much pressure on parents and relatives.  Therefore, we rely on donations and we need your help.  If you wish to donate to the Rewards Program, please make checks payable to “WJHS Rewards Program”.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely

Mark R. Hepner, Principal
