|Rock Island High School Top 10:
The Class of 2017 is a strong, diverse, high achieving group of 387 young men and women who crossed the bridge from student to graduate on June 3, 2017 at the 144th Annual Rock Island High School Commencement at the iWireless Center.
Those 387 individuals earned $4.3 million in college scholarships and funding, devoted over 2,000 volunteer hours in the community, led sports teams to victory and raked in awards for art, community service and academic excellence. Some even became entrepreneurs and launched their own business. Some overcame difficulties and experienced the true meaning of standing up for a cause they believed in.
“We’re the last of the 90’s kids,” said Valedictorian Elisabeth Hoeper. To her point, the Class of 2017 represents the last of the students born in the 20th Century. They remember life before cell phones, iPads and (gasp) the Internet. They are bringing up the rear of the Millennial generation (ages 18-34) and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Millennials surpass the Baby Boomers as the nation’s largest living generation.
The students of the Class of 2017 know both ends of the spectrum: life before the technology invasion and life after the social media invasion. Valedictorian Asrielle Allen sums it up: “Not only have I learned about formulas and rhetoric, but I’ve learned about friendship and teamwork. This school, these teachers, parents, coaches, community volunteers and Rocky students have given me a priceless educational experience.”
Congratulations Class of 2017!
