Education Foundation Awards More Than $35,000 in Scholarships

The Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation awarded more than $35,000 in scholarships to 30 graduating Rock Island High School seniors at the Academic Achievement Awards and Scholarship Night at Rock Island High School on Wednesday, May 9. Scholarships awarded were as follows: Charles O. Austin, Jr. Leadership Scholarship: Established in 1984 by Mr. Austin in appreciation for his years of work in Rock Island as Principal of Rock Island High School from 1951-1965 and as Superintendent of Rock Island-Milan Public Schools from 1966-197. The $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Zavier Clark. Class of 1965 Scholarship: The Rock Island High School graduating class of 1965 chose to work together to endow a scholarship for a graduating senior. Jalea Jackson Wins Thoms Scholarship 5K Award

Dylaan Bibbs & Jalea Jackson The Thoms Family Above & Beyond Scholarship announced Jalea Jackson as the grand scholarship winner at a reception for the finalists at Rock Island High School on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012. The announcement was made during a ceremony immediately preceding the Rock Island School board meeting. Jalea’s project, Lean on Me Benefit Concert, was aimed at raising awareness and the funds to support The Place 2B, a not-for-profit drop-in-center for teens 14 to 18 years old. She found passion for an organization in need of funds to replace their central plumbing system along with food and clothing for the program. Students Recognized at Annual Medal of Honor Awards

Board of Education member Linda Dothard reads the accolades of Rocky Medal of Honor winner Michaela Garrison Fifty students from 12 schools were recognized at the annual Medal of Honor Award Banquet at the Holiday Inn on Thursday, May 17. The banquet honors outstanding students who have proven themselves to be all around good students, citizens and caring individuals who bring with them a positive force that helps to influence the school to be a better place to learn and grow. Eugene Field Wins the 2012 Golden Rake!

Eugene Field Elementary is the 2012 winner of the Golden Rake Award! The award is presented by the Keep Rock Island Beautiful organization. Rock Island High School Symphonic Band Selected for All-State Honor Band

The Rock Island High School Symphonic Band has been selected as the 2013 All-State Honor Band by the Illinois Music Educators Association. This honor is reserved for the top performing bands in the state of Illinois. The band sent in an audition in March and just received word on May 14 that they were selected to perform at the IMEA Annual Conference. The All-State Honor Band concert of the Illinois Music Educators Association’s annual conference will be held in January 2013 at the Civic Center in Peoria, IL. The IMEA is the largest fine arts education organization in Illinois, and this concert features the most talented high school band students in the state. “It is an extremely high honor for our entire high school Symphonic Band to be selected to play at the state festival next January,”...
