IN-HOUSE / LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP LIST
This is a list of scholarships that pertain specifically to Rock Island High School students. They are either in-house or local scholarships. They are also listed on the master list of scholarships.

Thoms Family “Above & Beyond Scholarship” (Juniors Only)
1. This is a project based award.
2. The award may be used for any post high school training/study (techschool-college)
3. The project must be planned during the JUNIOR year (due April, 2012) and completed by the senior year .
4. Students may solicit help from other individuals or organizations in order to complete their projects (church groups, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.)
5. One $5,000 scholarship and three $500 scholarships to be awarded.
6. Applications are available from American History teachers beginning the week of February    , 2012.

**Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Minority female of African descent, have 2.75 GPA and attend four year college.  Deadline April 13th.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Moline-Davenport Chapter) Must be graduating senior in Quad Cities region.  2.5 GPA or higher, genuine need for financial assistance, & school or community service.  Essay and 2 letters of recommendation.  Deadline April 15th.
Quad Cities Illini Club

 

$500 scholarships to students in the QC area who attend U of Illinoi.  Must complete application, include transcript and complete essay.  Deadline April 15th.
Rock Island High School Class of 1956 Foundation RIHSgraduating senior.  2.0 GPA of better.  Three letters of recommendation.  Completed application.  Essay required.  $750 award.  Deadline April 15th. 
Kings Daughters and Sons Rank in top one-half of class, show financial need, and be accepted by a college.  Award $500 to be used for books.  Deadline April 17th.
Hass Family Scholarship

Open to students with a 3.0 GPA, good leadership skills and character. Must not be in the top 10. Award: approximately $1,000. Deadline April 20th
The Amy Helpenstell Liberal Arts Scholarship (online at www.rockislandeducationfoundation.org) For a student who is planning to attend AugustanaCollege. Award based on financial need, citizenship and good academic standing. Students must verify admittance to Augustana. Award is $1,000. Deadline April 20th
Judith A. Katz Fine Arts Scholarship

For a student attending AugustanaCollege.  Preference will be given to those who has been in music, drama or art for two years and who wish to pursue a degree in the Fine Arts. Criteria based on financial need, active in school and community, citizenship and good academic standing. Student must verify admittance to Augustana. Award: $4,000. Deadline April 20th
 R. Decker Magee Memorial Scholarship

 For student who is planning to attend college or vocational school. Based on participation in activities, character, and conduct. Must have a C+ average. Award: $500. Deadline April 20th
Stanley H. Coin Business Scholarship

Seniors who are in top 25% of the class may apply. Must have participated in the business curriculum at Rocky for at least two years. Financial need and school and community involvement are considered. Award: $1,000. Deadline April 20th
Rock Island High School Class of 1965 Scholarship

Open to students with a 3.0 GPA or better.  Consideration given to financial need, demonstrated leadership skills, and participation in in school and community service.  Award $1,000 Deadline April 20th
The Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation Scholarship

Two individual scholarships are available, one for a male student and one for a female student. Must demonstrate financial need and must have a 3.0 or better G.P.A. Individual award: $2,500. Deadline April 20th
The Marler Clark Science Scholarship

For a student who is planning to attend college and has an interest in science.  Award is $2,000 Deadline April 20th
Women’s Computer Science, I.T. & Math Scholarship

For a Senior female student who is interested in pursuing a college degree in Math, Computer Science, or Information Technology. Award $500.. Deadline April 20th
American Business Women’s Association Scholarship Paddlewheel Chapter For women who are citizens of the U.S.and a resident of Rock Islandor ScottCounty.  Must be attend an accredited college and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Three letters of reference, completed application, transcript, biographical statement.  Deadline April 30th
ASHRAE-American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers

$1,000 scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career in HVAC.  Must complete application, send transcripts and letters of recommendation.  Deadline April 27th.
**Kenneth Greene Wrestling Scholarship Senior wrestlers eligible.  Based on integrity, leadership, sportsmanship, character, desire, dedication, and financial need.  Deadline April 27th.
**Joyce E. Mirr Education Scholarship For graduating seniors who rank in the top 1/3 of the class and plan to major in education.  Award $1,000.  Deadline April 27th.
**Rock Island County NAACP Educational Scholarship One $500 scholarship for a student continuing education at an accredited college, university or trade school.  Must have a 2.75 GPA, complete application, include transcript, 500 word essay and letter of recommendation.  Deadline April 27th.
 

**Rock Island Optometric Scholarship

Must major in fields such as optometry, medicine, nursing and dentistry.  Submit brief statement of their interest in the scholarship.   Award $100.  Deadline April 27th.
**Theresa Meincke Memorial Scholarship Must be a Rocky student who plans to major in English or journalism, demonstrate talent for creative writing and rank in top 1/3 of class.  Must submit four writing samples.  Award $1000.  Deadline April 27th.
**University of Iowa – Lappin Family Scholarship Must attend Universityof Iowaand be a member of National Honor Society.  Financial need is a minor consideration.  Award $750, renewable for four years.  Deadline April 27th.
**Thode Family Scholarship Awarded to student interested in the Fine Arts.  Must have a GPA of 2.5-3.5.  2 Awards annually (one male and one female).  Must major in the Fine Arts in college.  $500 scholarship.  Deadline is April 27th.
Rock Island County NAACP Educational Scholarship One $500 scholarship for a student continuing education at an accredited college, university or trade school.  Must have a 2.75 GPA, completed application, include transcript, 500 word essay and letter of recommendation.  Deadline April 27th.

**Guthrie Family – Rocky Spirit Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships awarded annually to one male and one female senior who have served as a student assistant such as team manager, office worker, teacher assistant, etc.  2.75 – 3.25 GPA.  Deadline April 30th.
 

**Harvey M. Bender Memorial Scholarship

Must be a member of a varsity athletic team, have a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate outstanding character and citizenship.  Award $500 to one male and one female student.  Deadline April 30th
**Duncan Reid Scholarship Must be a senior varsity basketball player in good academic standing.  Deadline April 30th.
Don Wright Memorial Scholarship Student must be a track and field athlete for at least 2 years, have a 2.5 GPA, been accepted to college, submit an application, letter of recommendation.  Deadline May 1st.
The Society of Italian Americans Scholarship Must submit essays, transcript and completed application.  $1000 award.  Deadline May 1st.
 

The Virgie Wells Scholarship /Skip-A-Long Child Development Services

$750 scholarship.  Must be an alumnus of Skip-A-Long.  Students must complete application, demonstrate leadership and three letters of reference.  Deadline May 4th.
**QC United A matching fund scholarship with Augustana, Blackhawk, St. Ambrose or Scott.  Must have a 2.5 GPA, transcripts, completed application and list of your accomplishments (see application)  Deadline May 15th.
**Coach Reece Morgan Community Scholarship Must complete application, have a 2.5 GPA, transcript and list of your accomplishments (see application).  Deadline May 15th.
Black Hawk Chapter- National Society of Professional Engineers One $1,000 scholarship to a student who pursues Engineering at an accredited institution.  Must have minimum 3.0 GPA and 22 composite ACT score.  Completed application and transcript must be submitted.  Deadline May 16th.
Milan Lions Club Must reside in Milanor southwest Rock Islandor be a dependent of a Milan Lion living outside the boundaries.  Must be a student of good character, be accepted at a school for next year and show financial need. Award $1,000.  Deadline May 16th.
Black Hawk Chapter- National Society of Professional Engineers One $1,000 scholarship to a student who pursues Engineering at an accredited institution.  Must have minimum 3.0 GPA and 22 composite ACT score.  Completed application and transcript must be submitted.  Deadline May 18th.
**The Wendland-Moran Scholarship Must be a senior athlete, have a 2.75 GPA and be of good character and citizenship in school and the community. Two (2) $500 awards will be given; one to a female, one to a male.  Deadline is May 25th.
 

**M.L. Lockhart Scholarship Fund (Martin Luther King, Jr. Center)

Must have 2.5 GPA.  Completed application, three (3) letters of recommendation and copy of transcript.  Deadline June  by 1st 5:00 p.m. to the MLK Center
**Justin Sharp Memorial Scholarship Student must have a 3.25 GPA.  Attend school in Rock Island, Scott, or GalesburgCounties.  Requires two letters of recommendation and completed application.  One time award of $1500.  Deadline is June 1st.
