IN-HOUSE / LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP LIST
This is a list of scholarships that pertain specifically to Rock Island High School students. They are either in-house or local scholarships. They are also listed on the master list of scholarships.

Thoms Family “Above & Beyond Scholarship” (Juniors Only)
1. This is a project based award.
2. The award may be used for any post high school training/study (techschool-college)
3. The project must be planned during the JUNIOR year (due April, 2012) and completed by the senior year .
4. Students may solicit help from other individuals or organizations in order to complete their projects (church groups, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.)
5. One $5,000 scholarship and three $500 scholarships to be awarded.
6. Applications are available from American History teachers beginning the week of February    , 2012.

R.I.A. Federal Credit Union

(on-line only)

Three $1,000 scholarships.    Must be a member of the R.I.A. Credit Union.  Applications at www.riafcu.com . Deadline February 15th.

 

Illinois PTA – Lillian E. Glover Scholarship

(online only)

Must major in education or education related major degree program that requires certification from a state board of education.  Rank in upper 25%.  Awards $500 and $1000.

Charles Curry SMART Bus Scholarship Must attend college in Iowaor Illinois, have a 3.0 GPA, major in Natural Resources or Education and complete required application.  Deadline February 28th.

 

IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union IHMVCU

Twenty-Four (24) $1,000 scholarships for students in good standing as members of IHMVCU.  Deadline is March 1.

 

National Defense Transportation Assoc. (NDTA)

(online application)

This scholarship promotes careers in Business Transportation and Logistics.  Four (2) $3,500 and (4) $2,000 scholarships.  Must complete application, submit ACT, two written recommendations, 800 word essay and official transcripts.  Apply at www.ndtascottstlouis.org

Deadline March 1st.

 

South Rock Island Township Officials of Illinois Scholarship Seven (7) – $2,000 awards will be given.  Must plan to attend an Illinoisinstitution. B average required.  Must have demonstrated an active interest in extracurricular activities, which may include interest in local government and community service. Must be UScitizen. Essay required.  Deadline March 1st.

 

Tri-County School Food Service Association One time scholarship to student attending college that plans to major in Food Service, Home Economics, Dietetics, or child care.  Basically any degree that will involve working with children.  $200 scholarship.  Deadline is March 1st.

 

St. Patrick Society of the Quad Cities Must be relative of a society member.  Award $1,500.  Deadline March 2nd.

 

Order of AHEPA Scholarship

Must be of Greek ancestry, have a B average.  Award:  $1,000.  Apply at www.ahepa.org  Deadline March 15th.

 

Rock Island Post – Society of Military Engineers

$4,000 and $1,000 scholarships.  Must major in engineering or an associated field, 3.0 GPA.  Strong math-science background. Apply online. Deadline March 16th.

ABBOTT SCOTTISH RITE SCHOLARSHIPS

Abbott Scottish Rite Scholarships are given to the children of Scottish Rite Masonic families or to young people who have been active in Masonic- related organizations, such as DeMolay, Rainbow and Job’s Daughters. Multiple scholarship opportunities available. Deadline is April 1st.
 

IA/IL- American Chemical Society /Donald Kiser Memorial Scholarship

 

A one year $750 award.  Must pursue studies in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering.  Must also have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement in science or related area.  Deadline April 1st.

 

Kings Daughters and Sons Rank in top one-half of class, show financial need, and be accepted by a college.  Award $500 to be used for books.  Deadline April 17th.

 

Hass Family Scholarship

Open to students with a 3.0 GPA, good leadership skills and

character. Must not be in the top 10. Award: approximately $1,000. Deadline April 20th

 

The Amy Helpenstell Liberal Arts Scholarship (online at www.rockislandeducationfoundation.org) For a student who is planning to attend

AugustanaCollege. Award based on financial need, citizenship and good academic standing.

Students must verify admittance to Augustana. Award is $1,000.

Judith A. Katz Fine Arts Scholarship

For a student attending AugustanaCollege.  Preference will be given to those who has been in music, drama or art for two years and who wish to pursue a degree in the Fine Arts. Criteria based on financial need, active in school and community, citizenship and good academic standing. Student must verify admittance to Augustana. Award: $4,000. Deadline April 20th

 

R. Decker Magee Memorial Scholarship

For student who is planning to attend college

or vocational school. Based on participation in activities, character, and conduct. Must have a C+ average. Award: $500.

Stanley H. Coin Business Scholarship

Seniors who are in top 25% of the class may

apply. Must have participated in the business curriculum at Rocky for at least two years. Financial need and school and community involvement are considered. Award: $1,000.

Rick Gilliland Scholarship

For a student who is going to enter the field of education and

planning to attend BlackHawkCollege, who hopefully will return to teach in the Rock Islandschool system. Award: $500 Deadline April 20th

 

Jumer’s Casino and Hotel Scholarship

Open to students with a 3.0 GPA or better.  Consideration given to financial need, demonstrated leadership skills, and participation in in school and community service.  Award $1,000 Deadline April 20th

 

The Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation Scholarship

Two individual scholarships are available, one for a male student and one for a female student. Must demonstrate financial need and must have a 3.0 or better G.P.A. Individual award: $2,500. Deadline April 20th

 

The Marler Clark Science Scholarship

For a student who is planning to attend college and has an interest in science.  Award is $2,000 Deadline April 20th

 

Women’s Computer Science, I.T. & Math Scholarship

For a Senior female student who is interested in pursuing a college degree in Math, Computer Science, or Information Technology. Award $500.. Deadline April 20th

 

ASHRAE-American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers

$1,000 scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career in HVAC.  Must complete application, send transcripts and letters of recommendation.  Deadline April 27th.

 

Don Wright Memorial Scholarship Student must be a track and field athlete for at least 2 years, have a 2.5 GPA, been accepted to college, submit an application, letter of recommendation.  Deadline May 1st.

 

 

 

The Society of Italian Americans Scholarship

 

 

Must submit essays, transcript and completed application.  $1000 award.  Deadline May 1st.

 

 

The Virgie Wells Scholarship /Skip-A-Long Child Development Services

 

$750 scholarship.  Must be an alumnus of Skip-A-Long.  Students must complete application, demonstrate leadership and three letters of reference.  Deadline May 4th.

 

Rock Island High School

Class of 1956 Foundation

RIHSgraduating senior.  2.0 GPA of better.  Three letters of recommendation.  Completed application.  Essay required.  $750 award.  Deadline April 15th. 

 

Black Hawk Chapter- National Society of Professional Engineers One $1,000 scholarship to a student who pursues Engineering at an accredited institution.  Must have minimum 3.0 GPA and 22 composite ACT score.  Completed application and transcript must be submitted.  Deadline May 16th.
