BLACK HISTORY MONTH Negro History Week was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. It later went on to become Black History Month. The purpose of Black History Month is to promote awareness of African American history to the general public. Rock Island High School Senior Wins Thoms Scholarship AwardThe Thoms Family Above & Beyond Scholarship announced Jalea Jackson as the grand scholarship winner at a reception for the finalists at Rock Island High School on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012. The announcement was made during a ceremony immediately preceding the Rock Island-Milan Board of Education meeting. Jalea’s project, Lean on Me Benefit Concert, was aimed at raising awareness and the funds to support The Place 2B, a not-for-profit drop-in-center for teens 14 to 18 years old. She found passion for an organization in need of funds to replace their central plumbing system along with food and clothing for the program. The result was a huge success by raising gross revenues in excess of $9,800.00. When asked why she was driven to this project, she reflected, “As I think about my life...

SWIRL 2012: Snowflakes in Paris
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France. The Rock Island High School student council has been working hard on planning the 2012 SWIRL dance “Snowflakes in Paris.” The date is Saturday, Feb. 25, 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. in the Small Gym at RIHS. Tickets go on sale in the bookstore the week of 2/13/2012 and it is $10 per ticket. Part of the proceeds from the dance will go to United Way’s Imagination Library, a United Way sponsored literacy project that provides books to preschool age children each year until they enter Kindergarten.
