Chapters 18-28 Holes

To understand a character’s role in a story, it helps to look at that person from several angles.

When you’re asked to describe or analyze a character, think SADDR, which stands for four ways of looking at a character: Speech, Action, Description, Drawing, and Reaction of others. )

Trout Walker says, “No one ever says ‘No’ to Charles Walker!” This tells you he usually gets his way, and that he wants to scare Kate into doing what he wants.

Choose something that Sam Walker says. What does it tell you about what he is like?

What did he say?

Everyone must post to the following questions.  Support must be givne for your answers, where in the book supports your inferences?  This may be done in class or from home.  I will not post answers until all students have posted!

What are three reasons you could infer that “Camp Green Lake” isn’t fun for the campers?

What is one reason you can infer that the Warden is not nice to the campers?

Reading Response 01-05-11

A theme is “a subject or topic of discourse or artistic representation” (Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, tenth ed.); in other words, a theme is a big idea worth thinking and talking about.

In Holes, one theme is something called perseverance. Perseverance means continuing to try, even though what you’re trying is hard, things get in the way, or it’s discouraging, or all three.

How do you know Stanley’s father has perseverance?  Do you or someone you know (or know about) have perseverance?  Tell me how you know they have perseverance.
