In the last year, Earl Hanson Elementary has been working on becoming a full service community school. As a part of this endeavor, it was important to determine needs and wants of students and their families.
Earl Hanson has a large population of ELL students who speak Karen as a native language and it was important to those families to have additional instruction in their native language. Therefore, the Lights on for Learning after school program started a Karen School with one of the Earl Hanson ELL Paras, Mr. Eh.
In January 2017, Mr. Eh and three volunteers began the process of teaching both Karen writing and language at Karen School and there were 35 students who attended the first class. Students and parents are happy that their native language is being taught at Earl Hanson.
