Character Education

Earl Hanson teachers are using Character Education to teach skills which reinforce our Hawk I Rules of being respectful, responsible, and safe. Character Counts lessons are ways to practice how we want all students to behave at school. For the month of August and September, we are learning:

At Earl Hanson school starts at 8:20. Our breakfast is served from 7:50-8:15. Students not eating breakfast are to arrive after 8:10, since there is no supervision provided.

Students must be dropped off and picked up in front of our school on 9th Street. Please, remember that the circle drive is reserved for our busses and the north parking lot is reserved for our faculty. Thank you so much for your support in keeping our students safe.

The Rules for the School Lunch Program state that no pop will be allowed during lunch time. Thank you for your help!

Electronic Devices at School

Our students may bring cell phones to school as long as they are kept turned off and stored in their lockers during school hours.

Other electronic devices such as Game Boys, Play Stations, iPods, are not to be brought to school.

Appropriate Dress

Clothing at school must be modest and conducive to the school environment. Students are expected to take pride in their appearance and to dress appropriately for focused study.

Examples of inappropriate clothes include:

• Excessively baggy, wide-leg, or sagging pants or pants that are excessively long as to be dangerous, pants should be secured at the waistline
• Oversized jerseys without proper undergarments

News from Ms. Williams’ Class

We are off to a great start in 1^st grade! The students are really enjoying our new math curriculum. They are building and creating with shapes this unit. We are working toward becoming readers and writers by being serious about our schoolwork. We have already earned a popcorn party by showing respect and cooperation. Now, we are working on a popsicle party. Students are earning points toward the party by showing classroom cooperation. We are having a great month!

Riiiiiinnngggg! Oh no, we’re late!

I guess you know what that sound is, yes, the famous Earl Hanson bell.

Are you excited to be back to school? We all are, and “we” would be the class of 2009-2010 with Mr. Hall.

This class, and all the rest of the 5^th and 6^th grade classes, can’t wait to see what new things we will learn this year!

We also can’t wait to experience our new math program and new literature.

This year will be fun and exciting with all of our new activities!

Boxtops – The fall box top competition is underway! Save your box tops and hand them in to your student’s classroom. Each box top is worth $.10 for the school – we are raising enough money to buy the school a book binding machine this year. The classroom that collects the most box tops by September 18th will win an ice cream party!!!!

Soup Labels – Another great way to support Earl Hanson without spending any money. Simply cut and save your Campbell’s soup and other participating brands upc’s and drop them in the collection bin in the front of the school. We are saving labels to purchase new P.E. equipment in the spring.

Parade – The Labor Day Parade will take place on Monday September 7th at 9:30 am along 18th Ave. between Washington Jr. High and Rocky. Any students and parents wanting to walk with the school should be at Washington Jr. High by 8:30 am. Bring candy to pass out and wear your school shirt if you have one. This year every student in the School made a star to help decorate the float so be sure to look for us!! If you cannot walk with us but would like to donate candy or a case of water please bring it to the office by Sept. 5th. Any questions call Molly Flowers 786-2463.

Younkers Community Day Books –

For our fall fundraiser we will be selling Younker’s Community Day books. These books cost just $5 and are full of valuable coupons to be redeemed on November 14th including a $10 off any item coupon! This is a great way to save money on your holiday shopping and support the school at the same time! For each book sold the school keeps 100% of the profit! The family that sells the most books will win a $50 Younker’s gift card so think about who you know who would like to purchase a book. More information will be coming home soon.

Pizza Day is coming September 18th. Support Boosters as we raise money for field trips and stock your freezer for fall break. We will once again be selling Mama Bosso’s 9 inch pizzas for just $2! We will have cheese, pepperoni and sausage – look for order forms to come home on the 14th with money due on the 17th. Questions call Amanda 786-6408.

New Faces at Earl Hanson

Candace Lopez is our new Grade 2-3-4 Instructional Teacher. She comes to us from Horace Mann with a tremendous amount of experience working with students and families.

Diana Bush is our new Curriculum/Media Materials Para-Professional. She comes to us from Eugene Field with extensive library experience.

Mrs. Bryan-Strandlund has retired from teaching. We wish Mrs. Bryan-Strandlund the very best.

Mrs. Lisa Pittard has taken a new position at the RI Center for Math and Science.

EARL HANSON BOOSTERS!

The Booster Club at Earl Hanson works to help the school help our kids! The group is open to all parents and staff at the school. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, August 11, at 6:00 p.m. at the school. Upcoming Booster events include games at the school-wide family picnic scheduled for August 9th, the book fair from Sept 22-24, and Pizza Day on October 18th. If you are interested in joining Boosters or would like more information, please contact Amanda Aunan at 786-6408 or plan to attend our first meeting!

Making School A Priority

Attendance is a #1 job.

Let your kids know that unless they’re sick, they must go to school. Try to schedule routine dentist and doctor appointments after school hours. If possible, take family trips and vacations during school breaks.

Show you care. Let your children to know that you’re interested in their learning? Talk about their school activities and projects. Attend as many school activities as you can. If homework and after-school activities conflict, speak up: “I know you have a baseball practice this evening, but homework comes first. After you finish, I’ll take you to practice.”

This year we are excited to introduce “Character Counts” as a framework for our character education. We will continue to focus on our three golden rules: Be Respectful, Be responsible, Be Safe. We will focus on one of the six pillars each month. In August and September, we will focus on RESPONSIBILITY with trustworthiness, respect, fairness, caring, and citizenship to follow. Please take time to discuss our new character education program with your students; our new planner is an excellent resource for it, too highlights a different pillar each month. Additional information regarding the “Character Counts” curriculum is available in my office or www.charactercounts.org.

Night of a Thousand Dreams

EH sold raffle tickets again this year. This fund raiser supports ALL schools, clubs & extra-curricular activities of District 41. Earl Hanson sold 964 tickets this year. Mrs. Cobb’s, Mrs. Stevenson’s, and Mrs. Lievens classrooms sold the most tickets and will be treated to a Pizza Party!

Congratulations!

Terrionna Gathright and Antwan Culberson are our Earl Hanson Illinois Principal Association Student Leadership Award winners.  These students were selected for exemplifying the characteristics of true leadership.  They were honored with a breakfast and award program on Friday, April 17, at Stoney Creek Inn.  Congratulations to these two students and their families.

Earl Hanson Music Club

Our Earl Hanson Music Club performed for our Rock Island Rotary Club Luncheon on April 28.  They performed a variety of songs and were well received!  Thank you, Music Club for an excellent performance!

Congratulations to Katie Moore for receiving Honorable Mention for 3rd graders in the WQPT reading Rainbows Young Writers and Illustrators Contest.  This is Katie’s third win.  Her entry was entitled, “When I Met a Fairy”.

Back Pack Night

July 30, 2009

Please join us for our first Earl Hanson Back Pack Night on July 30, 2009, from 5:30-7:00.  Plan to meet your child’s teacher and bring your child’s supplies to unpack in their classroom.

Ms.Schoening’s Class

On May 14th and 15th the student’s in Room 209 will have the opportunity to experience an overnight outdoor education program.  The Illowa Scouting program sponsors this program.  Students have been working on skills from the Learning for Life Program weekly.  This is the cultimating activity for the year.  Students will stay at Loud Thunder Boy Scout Camp.  They will stay in tents overnight, helping to plan menus and activities.  They will have to choose supplies, and plan purchases that will stay within a budget.  They will be involved in activities such as:  boating, fishing, and hiking, identification of trees, leaves, and animal tracks.  They will help with meal preparation and clean up. This is a great experience for all students.

Mrs. Heimburger’s Class

Our class enjoyed our trip to the Bandit’s game on April 27, 2009.  We were so lucky that the rain held off so we could take in the game after a four week reading project.  The Bandit’s WON the game Yeah!
We are looking forward to a full month of May.  We have a Dinosaur Dance that we have been practicing for May 5th.  We will be learning some fun facts about the farm and zoo animals.  We will end our year with a great field trip to the Zoo.  This has been a busy and fun year.

Mrs. Jorgensen’s 3/4 classroom

Hola!  This quarter we have joined Mrs. Stevenson’s class as we explore the Mayan ruins in Mexico and learn how to be archeologists with our video series “The Voyage of the Mimi.”  This video series also leads us into our mystery unit as detectives and our study of the rainforest later this quarter.  We are learning some basic Spanish and phrases as we learn about Mexico and are enjoying creating Mayan and Mexican art.  The most fun part of the Mexico unit is making our piñatas on the last day of the unit!  As we continue our detective work to solve all of our 4th quarter mysteries, we only hope that time is on our side!  Our remaining weeks of school will definitely be “Fabuloso!”
