Running Her Heart Out

Attending State two years in a row isn’t that common in high school. Going to practice everyday after school and working hard is very challenging. 2009 Track State Champion, Telis Garcia, shows lots of dedication to herself and her team by running her heart out the last two years at State. Running the 4×1 relay, 4×2 open relay, and the 4×4 relay, Garcia has set 2 records. “Yes, I’ve set records in the open 400 heat B at Moline, and the 4×1 set a new record, as well,” she says. She knows that her hard work isn’t even close to being done yet, though. She’s always been interested in running track. Telis never knew she would be part of winning the State Championship. For her, the atomospere of State was very intense. “The atomospere...

Choosing Fire Over Ice

So many fans battle out on who is better, Team Edward or Team Jacob. Twihards across the world have in their heads who should have won, who Bella should have ended up with. The Vampire or the Werewolf? Many chose Team Edward, but there are better reasons to be Team Jacob. 1. Jacob’s Dedication to Bella- “Even when he wanted to the most, he never leaves Bella,” explains Ariana Jakobsen. This is true, during New Moon, Edward leaves Bella in Forks, alone and heartbroken. Jacob is there for her all the way through. He is there to bring a smile to her face when Edward was nowhere to be found. Even when Jacob fell in love with Bella, and she chooses Edward, Jacob is there for her. He never leaves. He is loyal, just like a dog… or a wolf. 2. Jacob is hotter then Edward…...

Retro Rocky: A Blast from the Past

Here, I take a look at some interesting, creepy, and funny stories that were featured in previous issues of the Crimson Crier. Looking back at these old articles gives us insight into the trends and topics Rocky students were preoccupied with years ago. Bus Driver Enjoys Hearing Girls Talk About Boy Friends (February 27, 1942) Selected quote: “When interviewed, [one after-school bus driver] stated that he enjoyed listening to the girls discussing their boy friends. One little story he overhead still ‘tickles’ him immensely.” My take on it: I’m perplexed as to why this was newsworthy. The “little story” is downright creepy, considering the clandestine obscurity of it, too, “‘I hear the boy friend has joined the navy.’…‘Yes, and they cut off nearly all his curly hair,...

Once a Rock, Always a Rock

Mr. Kennelly gives the slogan, “Once a Rock, always a Rock” a different meaning. Starting as a freshman in 1996, he has come a long way. He is now a State and Local Government teacher in the Freshman Academy, and loving every minute of it. “The students make me laugh,” he says. Many students come through Rock Island High School just passing through. Mr. Kennelly, on the other hand, was a part of history. Mr. Kennelly played on the football and baseball teams here. When Mr. Kennelly played here, the football team was runner up in State and the baseball team got third in State. In football, he played guard and his favorite memory was “beating Moline at their Homecoming in overtime on a fourth and goal in the last play of the game.” This exciting game took place in 1999, when... [Read more of this review]

Full-Time Mentor, Part-Time Security Guard

When you think of a high school security guard you assume someone who is a stickler for the rules, out to get the kids, possibly someone who hates their job, or is plain unfriendly. But when you ask a student what they think of Mr. Butler, the response is, “Caring,” Keith Keesy said. “He genuinely loves the students and wants positive things for their lives.” Mr. Butler truly adores his students, which he mistakenly was calling kids before he recognized they aren’t kids anymore, but young adults. He watches the students at Rock Island High School grow within themselves and as a whole. And not only do the students at Rocky help him, but he helps them. A student one year had nowhere to go and a million dreams to fulfill. Mr. Butler took his own time to work with... [Read more of this review]

Rice’s Rise To The Top

Rice Works Hard Ms. Tia Rice is living proof that if you stay persistent in your goals, you’ll achieve them. Ms. Rice can be an inspiration to all students, and after hearing her story, it’s almost impossible to not believe the theory that ‘hard work pays off.’ A former student of the high school she now teaches at, Ms. Rice is a true Rock Island High School Alum. One of the reasons she’s such a great mentor to kids, is because she’s walked the same halls and she can identify and relate to almost all of her students. It’s evident Ms. Rice is an English teacher because when she explains why she believes it’s important to have a personal connection with her students, she replied by saying that she compares herself with a favorite literary character... [Read more of this review]
