Girl Lunch About our Program

Rock Island/ Milan School District serves 750,000 lunches; 250,000 breakfast; and 15,000 after-school snacks each year. Our goal is to support student learning with a healthy and pleasant mealtime. Please check out our website to find menus, satisfaction survey, nutrition education, and fun games. Information for our business partners or future employees is also featured.

Commodity Use

High quality, government-donated commodites are used in school meals. Flour, cheese, fruits, vegetables, ground beef, turkey, and other foods are available to schools. Rock Island schools also receives a portion of its commodity-dollar value in fresh fruits and vegetables purchased through the Department of Defense buying network.

Program Costs

Commodities meet approximately one-fifth of the total food costs for School Nutrition Services. The remaining costs are covered by reimbursements from USDA and from income generated from ala carte sales and meal sales. Adult meals and visiting children meals are not subsidized and are sold at prices that covers all costs.

School Meals

Breakfast and lunch menus are planned using the Dietary Guidelines of 2005. Lunches are planned to provide an average of one-third of the key nutrients and calories a child needs a day. Breakfasts are planned to provide one-quarter of the key nutrients and calories recommended daily for children.

Food for Thought

Skim chocolate milk and 1% white milk are offered daily. Side dishes are prepared with low fat ingredients to balance the fat offered in popular entree items. All purchased fruits are in light syrup. Desserts are offered once or twice a week.

Rock Island students can prepay for meals by depositing cash or checks in the cafeteria. Parents can limit or lockout student’s spending in ala carte purchases by contacting the individual school cashiers.
